MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Avian Influenza has been confirmed in another backyard flock in Vermont.
Vermont agriculture officials on Tuesday afternoon said a non-commercial backyard flock of 20 birds in Windsor County tested positive, though they did not provide details.
It’s the fifth time a domestic flock has tested positive in Vermont since 2022.
Bird flu is primarily spread by wild birds such as ducks and geese as they migrate. While it is fatal to a variety of animals, those species can generally carry it without getting sick, which offers the virus a chance to mutate and thrive. The virus can be spread through droppings or any interaction between farm-raised poultry and wild birds.
The CDC earlier this month reported the first death of a human in the U.S. due to bird flu.
