First building in Burlington’s CityPlace project expected to open this summer

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) — The CityPlace project is now in its third winter construction season, and believe it or not, it is expected to open in just five months.

After breaking ground in the winter of 2022, Burlington’s CityPlace project is taking shape. Walking the halls of the 11 floors, you can see the long-standing vision is becoming reality.

“It’s a beautiful-looking building and I’m really proud to be part of building it here,” said CityPlace Partner Dave Farrington.

Farrington and his two local partners, Al Senecal and Scott Ireland, continue their work after months of inactivity from the previous majority partner and public doubt that the building would ever get off the ground.

“That’s one of the reasons we all got into it, knowing it’s just sitting. It was kind of languishing for a few years and that’s when we kind of got sick of waiting,” said Farrington.

Cityplace is divided into two buildings, and the smaller South building is slated to open in mid-to-late June.

It includes 53 residential market-rate units, retail space, and a roughly 150-room hotel.

The north building, which is in the early stages of construction, will also be mixed-use but include 315 market rates and affordable units. That’s slated to be complete in late 2026 or spring 2027.

“When we’re all done, there probably be 5 or 600 residents and then 300 hotel rooms,” said Farrington.

Some hotel floors are nearly complete, and residential ones are not far behind. This is welcome news for a downtown that relies on construction to provide an economic boost.

”That’s what’s really going to make its impact, people down here on the streets using the services and just lively. It’s going to pump some blood into Burlington,” said Farrington.

The project also includes reconnecting the long-severed Pine and St. Paul streets, which will be complete by the spring of 2027.
