State waste plan focuses on reduction, recycling

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont is revamping its plan for your trash.

In this mandatory five-year plan, the Agency of Natural Resources says they’re going beyond recycling and composting.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says Vermont’s only landfill in Coventry has less than 20 years of capacity left and they don’t know of any plans to build another.

They say other ways of handling waste are the best way to cut down on how much ends up in the trash heap.

Plan goals include throwing less away to begin with, and promoting sustainable materials management like composting and recycling.

They also want to cut down the amount of toxic products used.

A new addition to the report this time around – disaster planning after flooding in 2023 and 2024.

You can read the report and learn how you can cut your waste here.
