FAIRLEE, Vt. (WCAX) – An Upper Valley winter destination opens on Wednesday with a change in management.
The Skate Trail is a 3.5-mile loop around Lake Morey, one of the longest trails of its kind in North America.
It has been maintained by the Lake Morey Resort, but changes to the resort’s insurance policy and liability issues raised concerns that it might not open this season.
Now, the town of Fairless says it is taking over management. Fairlee Town Administrator Ryan Lockwood says it’s a great resource for the region and that conditions permitting, skating will continue. “It is a huge economic driver for us and the fact that the ice trail remains free is something that you can’t find a lot nowadays — an outdoor activity that you don’t have to shell out a lot of money for,” he said.
Access to the ice will now be via the town beach rather than the resort. The resort will continue to offer rentals for those who need skates and helmets.
