Mayor appoints group to analyze Burlington's property tax structure

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Burlington’s mayor is addressing the city’s affordability crisis by convening a tax fairness working group to better serve Burlington’s future.

The tax fairness working group consists of city staff and community members. They will analyze the city’s property tax structure and identify ways the city can have a more equitable and sustainable system for budgeting and raising money.

Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak says she also wants to use this group to identify ways to transition the city to a multi-year budgeting practice.

“It will provide some more sustainability in terms of planning for what the city needs to do in terms of areas we’re growing, but also predictability for taxpayers to know where we’re headed. That stability is really, really needed in the city of Burlington,” said Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak.

The mayor hopes they can examine ways to potentially change the taxation system in the city of Burlington.
