SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The South Burlington Fire Department is trying to connect with more kids to teach them about fire safety.
Firefighter Michelle Collins spent her Saturday morning reading aloud, at the South Burlington Library.
This is the first time the fire department and library are trying this kind of story time hour. Firefighter Collins told kids what fire fighters do, what equipment they use, and how to stay low if your house ever catches on fire. Collins also expresses the importance of showing kids what she looks like with her gear on so the kids don’t get scared in an emergency.
“Make sure that the kids can see that I am still me when I take my mask off. If they should ever be stuck in a fire situation, that they would know to come towards us as fire fighters, and to not be afraid of us,” said Collins.
The fire department and the library are hoping to schedule another story time in the next couple weeks.
