Finding help for those who struggle in winter weather

ENOSBURGH, Vt. (WCAX) – While a week full of fluffy snowfall is fun for skiers and snowboarders, the fresh snow can cause issues for others who struggle to get around in the winter weather.

Walking in a winter wonderland can be challenging to navigate.

“We had a lot of snow, it was nice and fluffy,” said Steven Comeau of Enosburgh.”It was a crosswalk over there, I had trouble walking in there.”

With fresh snow and ice on the ground this week, it’s an uphill battle for older residents and those with mobility issues.

“You know, the people who that can’t get out or need to get out, their driveways sometimes aren’t plowed so it can be challenging,” said Peter Kaseoro, who volunteers for Meals on Wheels to lend a helping hand. “They still have to eat, right?”

Some residents, like Shirley Duso of Enosburgh, rely on help from their community.

“I get assistance. He’s very good, he’s a neighbor. That’s what he does, he plows driveways. For the last four days, I think, or five, he’s had to plow it twice a day,” Duso said.

While some, like Duso, are able to get that support with things like plowing their driveway, others struggle to find or afford that support.

“They can’t get out, that’s why they need this, they need the service more this time of year than they do at other times, yeah. Especially in weather like this,” Kaseoro said.

Despite the challenges it brings, the fresh snowfall is a reminder of times gone by.

“I love it. I really do,” Duso said. “My childhood was in Canada, and we always had a lot of snow. I remember the first time I came down here skiing. I just like winter.”
