Former Vermont sheriff offered plea deal

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A plea agreement is on the table for an embattled former Addison County sheriff.

Peter Newton was arrested on sexual assault charges in June 2022. He denied the charges and calls to step down at the time.

Newton didn’t run for reelection in 2023.

The proposed plea deal which calls for Newton to plead guilty to lewd and lascivious conduct and simple assault does not include any jail time as long as he follows the conditions outlined in the agreement. Those include attending counseling and not working in law enforcement in any capacity.

If he violates the conditions, he could spend two years behind bars.

A judge still needs to sign off on the deal. Newton will be in court later this month.
