NORTH WOODSTOCK, N.H. (WCAX) – It’s been so cold that a popular winter attraction in North Woodstock, New Hampshire, is opening early.
The New Hampshire Ice Castles are opening their frosty doors on Friday. This is one of their earliest openings.
While the castles shine blue during the day, when the sun goes down they are lit with LED lights embedded in the ice.
The process begins in October when a team of artists and builders craft the castles entirely by hand, using millions of icicles harvested and frozen on-site. This year’s early cold weather gave the team a head start.
But the real VIP on the staff is someone else.
“Mother Nature is 100% the main architect for any of our castles. We pretty much do a dance with her the entire season,” Assistant Manager Luke Ely said.
Staffers hope to keep the ice castles open through April, depending on the weather.
Tickets are $31 for everyone 12 and over, and $23 for 11 and under.
