Officials share Halloween fire safety tips

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Trick or treating is all fun and games, but fire safety can keep you from a real scare this Halloween.

According to the Clinton County Fire Association, an average of 835 structure fires were started by decorations each year from 2018 to 2022.

They recommend swapping real candles for battery-operated lights or glow sticks.

They also recommend avoiding trailing fabric in costumes, giving kids a flashlight or glow sticks as part of costumes, keeping decorations away from open flames or heat sources, and teaching kids to stay away from fire.
