Vt. Special Olympics returns after COVID hiatus

ESSEX, Vt. (WCAX) – A state wide competition — with lots of games — is back.

Vermont’s version of the Special Olympics made its return after a COVID hiatus.

The event is designed for people with mental disabilities to compete against each other in baseball, soccer and track.

Hosted by Essex High School. the games haven’t happened since 2019.

Essex High School hosted the games.

The Special Olympics had over a dozen teams, and 300 people competing from all over Vermont.

Officials say, this is a good way to make sure all people get the same opportunities to play a sport.

“Special Olympics is just an incredible place where our athletes of all different abilities and celebrate their hard work and dedication. It is important that we have as many as competitions as we can. We are finally getting back to state wide level competitions,” Sarah McCaffrey of Special Olympics Vermont said.

Officials hope next year the games will be even bigger.
