WINOOSKI, Vt. (WCAX) – City officials say the Winooski bridge project is on track, and they are shoring up who pays for what as the plan moves closer to construction.
Burlington and Winooski will each pay for 5% of the project to replace the bridge that carries traffic over the Winooski River between the two cities. The state will pick up 10% of the tab and the feds will pay for the rest.
Construction isn’t set to begin until 2027.
Officials are still taking public comment but city leaders in Winooski know the major changes that need to be made.
“It has, you know, extremely narrow sidewalks, no shoulder for bike and pedestrian use. The vehicle lanes are very narrow. So, the new bridge design will accommodate a lot of the uses that we hear a lot about from the public.” said Jon Rauscher of Winooski Public Works.
The project is expected to cost between $60 million and $74 million.
