BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The University of Vermont is re-branding, phasing out its Old Mill tower-themed logo in favor of a more minimalist approach — the letter “V” on a shield. But the change is being greeted with mixed reactions on campus.

“I don’t really like it. I think it is very basic. I don’t know, I think it represents UVM as much as the logo that is now,” said Maria Caballero, a UVM junior.

“I think this is just bland. I don’t think it really represents how beautiful our school is,” said Annie Mowers, a UVM junior. “I think it’s very rudimentary at best. Who designed this? Yeah, that does not make me very happy.”

According to school officials, UVM hasn’t had a change in their logo since the early 2000′s and making this move is essential for growth.

School officials declined an interview but did say the new logo supports the school’s mission and is designed to connect with more students both here and internationally.

But current students we spoke with say they better connect with the classic tower logo. “It makes me think Vermont. The old steeple looks pretty nice. I look around campus, I see them everywhere. It reminds me of home. I will be honest, it might be a bit of a downgrade,” said Griffin Wilczynski, a first-year student.

There was no immediate information on how much the logo reboot cost. School officials say the formal announcement is coming in three weeks. They say that athletic teams will continue to use the current catamount branding.
