STOWE, Vt. (WCAX) – Many people gathered for the 79th annual Stowe Derby Sunday. It’s one of the oldest and most unique ski races in North America. It started back in 1945 as a bet between two skiers. The race attracts competitors, ranging from national ski team members and NCAA champions to recreational skiers.

“It’s great to see our community come together and really work together and enjoy the race but we also have people from New England from Canada come because it’s such a legendary race and it’s great to continue the legacy,” Andrew Kohn of Mt. Mansfield said.

While the Stowe derby can be very competitive for some, but it is also fun. The long course requires participants to ski approximately 20 km and has a drop of almost 2,700 feet. The winners will complete the course in about 43 minutes, while recreational skiers can take a couple of hours. This derby now includes fat bike racers.
