MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The Vermont Attorney General’s Office Wednesday released its annual domestic violence fatality report, looking at homicides in Vermont in 2022.

According to the report, there were 26 homicides in 2022 and six of those, or 23%, were related to domestic violence. These statistics are some of the lowest percentages since 1994. From 1994 to 2022, 45% of the 403 total homicides were determined to be related to domestic violence.

“We cannot talk about public safety without also talking about domestic and intimate partner violence,” Attorney General Charity Clark said in a statement. “Domestic violence is an epidemic happening behind closed doors. The work of the Commission provides us with an opportunity to make improvements to address domestic violence in our state. I want to thank the Commission for their work on this important matter, and members of the Legislature for considering the Commission’s recommendations.”

The report also looks at the manner of death and who’s responsible for those homicides and resources Vermonters can take advantage of.
