U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen announces plans for retirement

CONCORD, N.H. (WCAX) – New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen says she will be busy during her remaining time in the United States Senate.

Shaheen recently announced that she will not be seeking re-election in 2026. The 78-year-old has been in public office for 35 years. She is the first woman in New Hampshire to serve as both governor and U.S. Senator. As she begins to wind down her career in Washington, she says the issues that face Granite Staters every day will continue to be a priority.

“That we protect Social Security, that we protect Medicare, that we protect Medicaid so people in New Hampshire can continue to get the health care they need. To try to continue to make sure that is affordable,” said Sen. Shaheen.

Shaheen says she will also be focused on foreign policy, which includes the war in Ukraine. She is the highest-ranking member for the Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations committee.
