LEBANON, N.H. (WCAX) – Officials at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center worry rural residents could suffer because of the president’s proposed cuts to medical research.
As one of the nation’s designated cancer centers, New Hampshire’s only medical school and the only Level 1 trauma center in a two-hour radius, Dartmouth is worried cuts to their federal funding could come at the cost of patients.
The hospital conducts hundreds of active clinical trials developing new treatments and providing state-of-the-art care to people in rural areas. Officials on Friday said that is now in jeopardy.
“So our ability to care for our neighbors, and especially to design innovative health care solutions that will work for everyone, including people in the rural parts of this country, all of that is at stake,” said Dean Madden, the vice provost for research at Dartmouth College.
Officials said they’re working to understand the financial impact of the funding cuts on their research and practices. They said they’re committed to sustaining as much research as possible regardless of what happens in Washington.
