BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – How might Vermonters be impacted by impending steel and aluminum tariffs?
Economists say that could send up the price of things like cars, cans, construction and machinery.
“It’s not just the existence of the tariffs, but the uncertainty that they generate with Canadians and Americans are going to start to ask themselves questions about, is this a good idea? Should I form a long-term relationship with an American importer or a Canadian supplier, if, in fact, that cannot be sure that that relationship will endure long term?” said Peter Matthews, an economics professor at Middlebury College.
The tariffs are set to go into effect on March 12.
The president says his administration is also considering tariffs on pharmaceuticals, computer chips and automobiles.
