COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) – With another round of snow expected to wallop our region this weekend, crews are hard at work preparing for the impacts.
A salt delivery arrived at the VTrans garage in Colchester on Friday ahead of what crews are expecting to be a busy weekend of winter weather.
“Possibly they’re saying an inch an hour for some of it on Sunday. So, this weekend is going to be different and it’ll be more challenging than we’ve had so far,” said Dan Shephard of VTrans.
Shepard says so far this year crews have been busy with smaller storms.
For what’s anticipated to be the season’s biggest storm so far, Shepard says crews will head out Saturday afternoon and evening, and then ramp up operations through Sunday morning.
It’s a reminder for Vermonters to hunker down and stay out of the way of road crews.
“If you don’t need to be out, there’s no reason to be out there and put yourself into any danger. There is going to be snow on the road. We can’t keep up with that much snow. We will not be bare until sometime Monday,” Shepard said.
He says colder temperatures forecasted for after the storm could make cleanup a challenge.
With the threat of heavy, wet snow comes the potential for power outages. Kristin Kelly with Green Mountain Power says they’re ready to take on any challenge that comes their way.
“One or two degrees change could really affect that. If it is heavy, wet snow, a lot of water content, that can stick to trees and power lines, pull things down and cause a lot of damage. So, we are prepared to respond to customers and be there as quickly and safely as possible,” Kelly said.
GMP says customers should sign up for text alerts to report and track power outages.
