Drone competition pilots student growth

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. (WCAX) – Middle and high school students from around the northeast completed challenges and team games as part of the River Valley Aerial Drone Competition.

Hosted at Springfield High School, the tournament is the lone one of its kind in Vermont.

Teams and students were scored on how well they fly small drones, both piloted and autonomous.

Chris Gray with the River Valley Tech Center says its important for many of the students to understand the workings of a drone, and take it into a passion for the future.

“For a lot of kids, connecting in middle school and high school is really really hard. When students connect with this kind of competition with this kind of event, they see the connection between the science and the math that their learning in school that makes it seem real makes it seem doable,” Chris Gray with River Valley Tech Center said.

Gray says he hopes to see more teams from Vermont participate in future years.
