Injured ice climber rescued from New York wilderness

HUNTER, N.Y. (WCAX) – Rescue crews had to call in a helicopter to help get an injured ice climber out of New York’s wilderness.

It happened at Buttermilk Falls in the town of Hunter.

DEC officials say the man fell while climbing solo with no ropes and no cellphone. Other climbers who found him called for help.

Forest rangers reached the injured man and called in the New York State Police for helicopter assistance. They then secured him in a harness so he could be hoisted up into the helicopter.

Officials say it’s a reminder to climb in a group and make sure to have a charged phone.
