ST. ALBANS, Vt. (WCAX) – Voters in St. Albans will weigh in on an effort to prioritize public safety in the city by increasing police salaries.
Since the St. Albans City Police Department has become fully staffed with six officers on duty, officials now want to up their pay by 8%.
City Manager Dominic Cloud says with the state’s competitive market for fully committed police officers, it’s a necessary move to make sure public safety remains a priority.
“If we were selling an eight-percent increase that the voters did not come out and ask for, it would be a different dynamic. You know, the voters came out, and I say ask but they really demanded it. We cut the heck out of every other department to give them what they wanted. This is what it costs,” Cloud said.
The proposal will be on the ballot for Town Meeting Day.
