More questions than answers in shooting investigation of Border Patrol agent

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Numerous questions remain about the suspects involved in the fatal shooting of Border Patrol agent last week and their connections to crimes in other states.

FBI officials tell WCAX that they are in the midst of an active investigation and there are multiple federal partners working together to bring justice for Border Patrol agent David Maland.

It’s been over a week since that fatal traffic stop of Felix Bauckholt, a German citizen, and Teresa Youngblut, an American student from Washington State. Bauckholt and Maland were both killed in that shootout out and Younblut was injured.

But many questions remain. With no ties to Vermont, why were Bauckholt and Youngblut in the Northeast Kingdom and what were they doing? What led up to the shooting and why would someone with no criminal history fire a gun at a border agent? There are also questions about a third person of interest in the case who remains unidentified..

Federal agents were monitoring Baukhult and Youngblut after they were seen around the Newport area in tactical gear. They were pulled over on I-91 for an immigration check and investigators allege that Youngblut opened fire on Maland and other officers without warning.

At least one border agent fired on Youngblut and Bauckholt but authorities haven’t specified whose bullets hit whom.

Youngblut was also injured and is facing charges related to the shooting, but has not been charged yet with Maland’s death.

Youngblut reportedly filed for a marriage application in Washington state with a man named Maximillian Snyder, who was also in court Tuesday facing murder charges in a different case in California.

Youngblut is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday in Burlington.
