Goodlander wary of using US military for immigration enforcement

BERLIN, Vt. (WCAX) – New Hampshire Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander says the Trump administration needs to follow the law when it comes to using the military in its mass deportation plans.

The president is making good on his campaign promise to carry out mass deportations, with federal immigration raids now underway in cities across the country.

The U.S. military is also being readied to deploy to the southern border, raising questions about the legality of using the military for domestic law enforcement purposes. “What we know for sure is that DOD personnel should not be enforcing our immigration laws. So, I am going to focus on making sure we are upholding the rule of law today and in the days ahead,” Goodlander said during a visit to New Hampshire Monday.

The Democrat is a member of the House Armed Services Committee. She says that while the country’s immigration system does need to be fixed — including securing the border — it’s an important reminder that historically, we are a country of immigrants.
