MASSENA, New York (WWNY) – A house fire Monday night claims the lives of five members of a family in the village.
A mother, father and 3 boys lived at the Chase Street home.
7NEWS has learned a sixth person went to the hospital.
A neighbor tells 7NEWS it was a fast-moving fire, and it looked like it started at the rear of the home producing heavy, thick smoke.
Massena’s school superintendent Ronald Burke addressed the community on social media saying 3 of the district’s students died along with their parents.
Burke added that he wanted to keep school open today to provide counseling, but weather conditions made it too dangerous.
However, Burke says in the facebook post: Today, our school family will begin the grieving process by opening the Madison Elementary School Library from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm for students, families and staff. All are invited to stop in for a few minutes or to stay for the full time to simply talk and process.
7NEWS is waiting for more information from the fire department and local officials.
