COVENTRY, Vt. (WCAX) – Court paperwork has revealed the names of the suspects in the deadly shooting of a Border Patrol agent in Vermont.
WCAX News first broke the news Monday that Agent David Maland was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop on Interstate 91 in Coventry.
Court documents now identify the suspects in the case as Felix Baukholt and Teresa Youngblut. Paperwork says Baukholt is a German citizen with an apparent expired visa, however, the FBI says the visa is current.
They were stopped under an immigration inspection on Monday in Baukholt’s Prius, driven by Youngblut. Multiple agents were present at the stop.
Records say within 15 minutes, shots were fired. It’s unclear who started it, but we know Youngblut fired a handgun at least twice toward at least one Border Patrol agent. Court records say Baukholt attempted to draw a gun. It’s not clear whether he fired.
The shootout ended in the deaths of Maland and Baukholt. Youngblut was ultimately transported to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where she remains.
After the shootout, the Vermont State Police bomb squad was called in due to concerns with the vehicle. They didn’t find any explosives but did find multiple laptops and various pieces of tactical gear, including night vision goggles, a ballistic helmet, dozens of rounds of ammunition and two-way radios, and they also found two cellphones wrapped in what appeared to be aluminum foil.
Court records indicate investigators had been surveilling the pair for a week when an employee of a Lyndonville hotel reported concerns to the police about them.
Investigators attempted to speak with the pair, but they declined an extended conversation, saying they were looking to buy property in the area.
They were then spotted a day before the shooting in downtown Newport.
Youngblut faces multiple charges in federal court in connection with the deadly shooting.
