BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Celebrations are set to kick off this weekend to celebrate the University of Vermont Men’s Soccer Team and their national championship win last month.
Sunday afternoon, members of the team will head down Burlington’s Church Street to finally celebrate UVM’s first-ever nonskiing national championship.
The street will be packed with people ready to cheer on the team.
“It’ll be great to have the students fully engaged and I know, you know, so many community members who have followed the team closely, them through the championship. Just can’t wait to be there in person and to feel the excitement and energy of the parade on Sunday,” said Jeff Schulman, UVM’s athletic director.
The Catamount Store on the Marketplace is stocked with all kinds of national championship gear for people to further celebrate the win.
“We’re pushing out the walls as far as we can and stocking up the floor as much as we can,” said Kelly Darling of the Catamount Store.
January is typically a slower month for businesses, so they are ready for a slew of customers at the Catamount Store.
“An immense amount of pride that we take as Vermonters as part of the university and just celebrating this big achievement for the men’s soccer team,” Darling said.
Following the parade will be a celebration at the top of Church Street complete with special guests and giveaways.
The university is telling people to come early and line the street to celebrate the team.
“There’s a really strong bond that we feel with the Burlington community and really with the entire state. So to be able to win a national championship and do it in such dramatic fashion is something that’s really special and worth celebrating, and that’s what Sunday will all be about,” Schulman said.
