New ECHO exhibit explores Rube Goldberg contraptions

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A new exhibit in Burlington celebrates the use of complex machines for simple tasks.

“Rube Goldberg: The World of Hilarious Invention” opens to the public on Saturday at the ECHO Leahy Center.

Rube Goldberg machines are elaborate and often made with items around the house and a lot of physics.

The new exhibit allows visitors to try their hand at a few predesigned machines or make their own.

“This exhibit is prime to be able to explore things like curiosity and really just to explore hilarity. I really hope that guests that come get to engage with the machines in a way that makes them laugh and smile, but also allows them to experience some small challenge,” said Billy Ernest, the public programs manager.

Watch the video to see our Cat Viglienzoni’s full conversation with Billy Ernest, and to see her give one a try.

People can also learn about Goldberg’s art career making comics.

The exhibit runs until Sept. 7.
