INDIAN LAKE, N.Y. (WCAX) – Wildlife officials rescued a moose that fell through the ice and got trapped in Indian Lake, New York, on Thursday.
The Department of Environmental Conservation says at around 11 a.m., a bystander saw a bull moose walk out onto the lake and then fall in.
Rescuers donned cold water rescue gear and went out onto the ice to help, cutting a path and guiding the moose to shore.
They admit they had to wing it a little bit.
“There’s no training manual on how to get a moose out of the ice,” Lt. Robert Higgins of the Environmental Conservation Police said with a laugh. “It was amazing. I was really surprised it was able to climb itself out onto the ice after being in the water for two hours because it was really tired. It was shivering and you know, didn’t have much energy left. So it was a big deal when that thing came out and plopped itself onto the ice.”
They say the moose eventually got up and went off into the woods.
