MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The state has struck a deal with the federal government to use Medicaid funds to help pay for housing for homeless Vermonters.
The Vermont Agency of Human Services says the agreement gives Vermont flexibility in how it uses its Medicaid dollars and will let the state use Medicaid to pay for critical housing support for Vermonters who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness.
The money could be used to cover short-term rent and medical respite for six months, as well as allowing up to $10 million to be put aside to build new housing.
The funding will be available starting in 2026.
