Vt. National Guard, UVM announce workforce training partnership

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A new partnership between the Vermont National Guard and the University of Vermont aims to improve the state’s workforce.

The Guard on Tuesday announced a collaboration with UVM’s Professional and Continuing Education program. They say it formalizes a relationship that already helps Guard members and their families improve skills and get into the workforce.

“I know I have people in our Guard who are probably under-employed and maybe spouses that are also under-employed or unemployed. We can align them with employment here in Vermont and help grow our workforce,” said Vermont National Guard Commander Maj. Gen. Greg Knight.

“This is actually the first partnership in the PRIME program with the university of its kind. So, this is a really unique and creative approach to what we might call a government-to-university partnership,” said UVM’s Bettyjo Bouchey.

With skills that Guard members already have, the goal is to help fill workforce gaps in fields including manufacturing, construction, and health care.
