New proposal aims to prevent housing discrimination

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Advocates and lawmakers are trying to ensure everyone can have a roof over their head.

The Housing Access for Immigrant Families proposal wants to make sure no one faces discrimination when looking for a home.

Migrant Justice says undocumented and asylum-seeking families are often discriminated against when seeking an apartment because of their immigration status.

The proposed bill would add citizenship and immigration status as a protected class under the Vermont Fair Housing Act.

It would also ban landlords from requiring a social security number to apply or sign a rental agreement. Instead, they can accept any form of government-issued ID.

At 11 a.m. on Friday, Migrant Justice, other advocates, and lawmakers will gather at the statehouse to introduce the proposal.
