Man sentenced for smuggling people into Vermont from Canada

RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) – A New York man originally from Mexico was sentenced on Thursday for smuggling nearly 100 migrants over the Canada border into Vermont.

Court records say Luis Fernando Barragan-Palacios, 29, of Queens, New York, made about 30 smuggling trips, illegally bringing those people to New York City.

The feds say it happened between August 2023 and January 2024, and that he was paid about $500,000 to do so.

Barragan-Palacios was arrested about a year ago when he was involved in a high-speed chase with police with six migrants in the cab of his truck.

U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Lanther sentenced Barragan-Palacios to 18 months in prison. The feds say he’s expected to be deported when he’s released.
