BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Burlington’s mayor says the city will not ask voters for a tax rate increase to fix the city’s budget woes.
The first fiscal year 2026 budget projections identify a gap of around $5 to $6 million that needs to be closed.
A few weeks ago, the mayor’s administration did not rule out a potential general fund tax rate increase, but now, they say that won’t be the case.
“We’re continuing to fix the structural challenges of the Burlington municipal budget, we fixed a very big challenge, year 1, when I came into this job and we’re continuing to do fixes that will make this process much easier. And hopefully not have structural budget gaps in the future,” said Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak.
Taxpayers will still likely have to weigh in on several other bonds, totaling more than $200 million, to fix the city’s aging wastewater and other infrastructure needs.
