North Country schools hold Model U.N. event

BEEKMANTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) – North Country students took an international trip inside the classroom.

Beekmantown High School hosted its Model U.N. event, which brought in more than 300 students from across the North Country.

Students were able to hold mock debates on issues such as air quality, nuclear disarmament and crisis events.

Like the United Nations, students participated in general assembly meetings and were tasked with finding solutions to complex international issues.

“It brings everybody together and uses politics as a method to create resolutions and solutions to issues that we globally face that can be applied to the local level as well,” Ozzie Comer said.

“Especially with the UN because it is a very real thing and a lot of tense topics are brought up and it is really good for young people to be involved with those conversations,” Estefania Oropeza said.

The school has been hosting the Model U.N. event for more than 20 years.
