Howard Center unveils new mental health urgent care unit

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A new resource is now available for anyone facing mental health issues in the Queen City.

Officials cut the ribbon for a new mental health urgent care on South Prospect Street in Burlington. The goal is to provide immediate support and services to anyone over 18 who is in crisis, while at the same time offering an alternative to the emergency room. The center is open to anyone seeking mental health medical care, peer support, assistance with medication, and offers a number of other same-day psychological services.

The program, a collaborative effort between the Howard Center, Community Health Centers of Burlington, Pathways Vermont, and the UVM Medical Center, is fully funded for the next three years and all services will be provided to the community free of charge.

“The long-term goals really are to have another option for Vermonters who are in crisis,” said UVMMC’s Stephen Leffler.

The center is not officially open for another week.
