Essex County, NY, using mental health app to address backlog

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) – A new app is aimed at helping New York residents access mental health support.

Essex County is one of six in the Empire State that partnered with Credible Mind, where people can find community resources, ask frequent questions, and take mental health assessments.

Terri Morse, the county’s director of community services, says the online tool comes at a time when the county has a waiting list of more than 200 people for mental health care. “The need has increased and I think it is as a result of COVID. This will help us provide individuals on a waiting list a resource to have instead of just being on a waiting list,” she said. Morse says more than 4,000 people have used it so far.

Access to the app for the county costs roughly $8,000. They plan to leverage opioid settlement dollars to fund the platform over the next two years.
