Vt. senators introduce bill to update social security benefits

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermonters on social security and their families could see their benefits enter the 21st century.

Both Vermont senators Peter Welch and Bernie Sanders are behind the move.

Under a new act, social security benefits would cover the costs of cremation and burials for the surviving family.

To do this, the bill would increase the Social Security Administration’s death benefit to account for inflation.

That would increase survivor benefits from $255 to $2,900 by next year.
