More ‘high-risk’ towns added to Vermont triple-e list

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont health officials on Wednesday added two more towns to the list of four high-risk areas for triple-e.

Sudbury and Swanton are now included on the list of high-risk towns where residents and visitors are urged to take protective measures against eastern equine encephalitis, a rare but serious disease spread by infected mosquitos. Those recommendations included staying inside as much as possible between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Alburgh, Burlington, Colchester, and Swanton were already on the list.

Governor Phil Scott on Wednesday said some areas of the state are close to getting their first frost, which will help kill off the biting bugs, but he says people should consider the advice of the state health department and make an informed decision. “Obviously, this disease is dangerous, but it’s not widespread at this point. We should acknowledge that it’s there and take precautions,” he said.

Burlington’s Summervale event was canceled last week because of the triple-e concerns. Organizers of Oktoberfest Vermont 2024 at the Burlington Waterfront on Monday said they were also pulling the plug. But this coming weekend’s Arthop in Burlington is still on.

Health officials are reminding people in affected areas to wear bug spray, limit time outside at dusk and dawn, and to wear long sleeves and pants during that time.
