SWANTON, Vt. (WCAX) – One of Vermont’s busiest state airports is getting a facelift to increase safety. The Franklin County State Airport project stretching over two years widened the existing runway by 15 feet, and this year’s project is adding one thousand more feet to the runway. The airport was closed six months last year. Construction continued after it opened again for a couple months this year. The project is all about making the airport safer. The airport operator hopes it will encourage more people to come to the region.
“This is all about making the pilots feel more comfortable. Now they’ve got a little more runway like to work with both on takeoff, floor and lawn landing. So safer. Safety is the number one reason we’re doing this. ” said Dan Delabruere from Vermont’s Agency of Transportation.
“It brings people to state brings business to the state and brings jobs to the state. So the this area and this airport in particular, has some of the greatest potential for economic growth in all of New England.” said Border Air Lieutenant, Clifford Coy. The upgrades will be completed this summer.
