BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The state of Vermont is seeing a new push for universal healthcare.
Several years ago, Vermont tried to set up a single-payer, government funded healthcare model, but former governor Peter Shumlin abandoned the project after cost concerns.
Advocates and some lawmakers at the statehouse contend that law is still on the books, and that it’s needed to bring down the spiraling cost of care. Healthcare costs have continued to rise this last year, and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans are increasing about 13%.
State lawmakers are launching the Universal Healthcare Caucus to try to move the needle on universal healthcare.
