SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. (WCAX) – Volunteers in Saranac Lake are getting ready to cut ice ahead of this year’s Winter Carnival.
The theme this year is Halloween-inspired. Organizers are encouraging visitors to bring a costume and non-perishable food items for entry to the “Creepy Carnival.”
Events include a hobby horse race, tug-o-war, and the storming of the iconic ice palace. And while this winter has been on the warmer side, the show will go on with or without ice.
“Winter Carnival is a spirit, okay, it is not really something that is tangible. It is one of those things that if the temperatures did not provide us with enough ice, Winter Carnival would still happen because it is a spirit. It is something that would happen in this community and it will thrive even in years to come,” said Rob Russell, chair of the Carnival Committee
The carnival is one of the nation’s oldest, dating back to 1897.
The event kicks off on February 2 and runs through the 11th.
